a friend who ask you to donate to a charity?

That has happened to me.
I usually just say, "Thanks, I know it's for a worthy cause, but I would prefer not to donate right now."
No other explanation is necessary.

Tell them that you need to know more about the charity before you feel comfortable to donate. Tell your friend that you have your charities already. Just be ready with some just in case. Make some up like Red Cross, Salvation Army, Etc..

An answer will really depend on the depth of your relationship. Perhaps this charity is very important to her/him. If you can't afford a donation of $$$ then maybe you offer to give up some time to help out the charity.

Simply tell them you are interested in donating because you donate to other causes/charities that interest you.

Simply say it in a polite manner that you have just donated elsewhere and your budget does not permit you any more.

I hem and haw till they remind me it's a tax write off them I tell them that I already am at my limit and can't deduct any more.
I wait thill they give me a out.
Im a coward that way.
