Don't want to forget about the ladies who don't mind a little fisticuffs either. We are obviously desensitized to violence and approaching the ancient Roman's thirst for bloodiness. But what drives us to the point of craving to see or participate in violent behavior?

I think that since men are meant to be hunters, sailors, warriors, ..., thus is why their existence is so close to violence!

The male hormone testosterone raises feelings of aggression that need to be acted upon either by ourself or by watching someone else act upon it.
Also the urge to prove who the alpha male is. That is who is the top dog, in matter of speaking, and thus attract more females, in theory, to pass the genes along to the next generation.
It is taught to us at a young age that boys are to be violent. Playing war, wrestling and such.Even most of our sports are violent in one way or another.
Is violence needed in our culture?

It's our culture that have turned men onto violence. It is thought to be "macho" and "manly" to physically fight, etc. look at the movies and TV we watch every day. Further drilling violence into people.

humans used to have battles all the time. blood sports and violence are a way for us to go back to our roots.

it makes them feel superior that they can rise above others. even if they themselves cant fight
