I recommend and use ALL of the following.
They are all free.
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Spybot and AdAware used to be all that was required. These days, they're nto enough. Your best bet is when you get an error that appears spyware related, google the file name and look for the specific fixer app that takes care of that particular bit of malware. There are literally hundreds of baddies out there already that Spybot and AdAware won't find and can't clean.
I see you're looking for the one perfect removal tool that works on everything, and that tool just doesn't exist.
One that comes close is called "Hijack This". It's brutal, if you delete the wrong thing by accident you will hose your PC for good. So be careful. You can get it here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

LavaSoft Ad-aware free version is the best in www.download.com --> juz go to the website and search for "ad-aware"
OR
you could try microsoft's Windows Defender which is also pretty good.
Find it in www.microsoft.com
I'd suggest you get both
