Is marriage an irrevlevant institution these days? I really feel like the concept of marriage has the potential to destroy a relationship.

How can I be certain marriage is right when so many people get divorced these days?

Marriage is a wonderful thing. Don't worry about other people and what they do. You need to find someone that is willing to work at a relationship. Marriage is not all ways fun and roses... you have to see the other person at there very worst, added to that you have the daily grind that makes live a little boring.
Are you and your potential mate willing to work hard and stick it out even when things go to crap? Believe me they do...Marriage is the ULTIMATE expression of love and your willingness to commit. But you both have to be on board or it wont work....That means often you have to sacrifice for your mate to make things work.
Don't give up just because some are not willing to put effort into something that can be, and is, a wonderful thing.

I'm not against marriage myself but if marriage were a car and you were told that there was a 50% chance of it disintegrating after you leave the dealer's lot, would you buy it? That being said, marriage can be right and enhance a relationship when you met the right person. How do you know if it's the right person? Well that's a whole different question now, isn't it? Personally I believe that the thing that changes the dynamics of the marriage relationship so radically is having children. People put so much time and effort into it that the few joys, compared to the innumerable griefs and worries, appear to make the entire endeavour worthwhile. C'est la vie!

You can't be 100% sure with the success of anything these days.

It's a risk you take, and one you should feel ready taking. I've never been married, and even though I think the meaning behind marriage, has been completely butchered, I think that a healthy marriage has its positive points.

I'm in no hurry to get married though. In fact, I could very easily live the rest of my life with someone, without a ring that so-called "signifies" the commitment.

If you're prepared to put in your all, and you know that your partner is too, take the leap together.

All the best.

Yes, we hear about high divorce rates, but don't focus on that. There are so many long, lasting and happy marriages too. Among the couples I know, the few that didn't make are the ones who didn't want it to work. They gave up. But marriage can be and is wonderful for many couples.

Marriage, in and of itself isn't such a bad thing, especially if you want to have children. It's who you marry that is vital. Even then, it's hard to say because people change over time. That knight in shining armour twenty years down the road can be pretty rusted and nasty. You just can't predict these things. So, the longshot is, over time people change and you can't change people. The shorter view is, follow your gut instinct and if you are with someone you really don't think has the qualities to be wonderful over time, just don't do it. Somebody else will come along and he might be the one that treats you with golden gloves forever. You just won't know this if you settle.

I live with my gf and there is no lawyer or priest that could bring me closer to her, we are one and I can honestly say that marriage would be irrelevant to how I feel about her. But that is just me. You have to find your answer to your question, as I don't understand it fully

Should you ever get married as opposed to what? be by yourself all your life? move in with your bf or gf and live in "sin"?

Do whatever it is that makes you happy. I wish you the best!

You can't be certain. Their is no way of knowing, all you can do is be selective in your screening process and learn to read body language.

Even so, it is still wise to get married. You will lose out legally if you don't.
