Tourism is an industry itself. Any industry has its effect on the economy of the country. And how much important is this industry, you can judge from the fact that at Govt. of India, there is a separate Ministry for Tourism and each State Government has a separate department for the purpose.
Tourism has not been a significant contributor in the overall economy of India. Yet, it is the life line of many states of India like J&K, Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, Lakshadweep Islands......
Sensing the significance of tourism and its potential on our economy, the projects like "Incredible India", "God's own country" etc. have been launched. FDI and private public partnerships in this industry are the examples as to how this industry is viewed at policy making levels.
Besides generating revenues for the country, it is creating employment opportunities, helping hospitality and transport sectors, creating useful infrastructure and providing greater avenues for interaction among Indian and the international and regional domestic folks.
