Popular music is subdivided into so many genres today, and while most people do not limit themselves to only one such category, they also tend not to like all artists within those categories. Does the style of music influnce your opinion of a band/artist more than their musical talent? Are there artists who are so talented that you enjoy their music, although you do not listen to any other artists in that genre? Are there artists who make you want to change the channel on your radio whenever their songs come on?

The dominant factor in my appreciation of music tends to be broken down in this order:

1) Do I like the "sound"? "Sound" in this case meaning the instrumentals, the tune, the notes, etc.

2) Do I like the lyrics? I have a very difficult time appreciating music which has poor lyrics, unless the sound is just so damned appealing that I don't care about the lyrics. Alternatively, a song might just be about the mood, so it doesn't really matter what the words say, as long as they inspire a feeling that I enjoy. A perfect example of the latter description is "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. The lyrics are pointless, but they still inspire a feeling of freedom and rebellion, and I enjoy the sound.

3) Do I enjoy the genre? I'm not proud to admit that the genre does have a strong influence on whether or not I like the music. This is also usually more of a subconscious thing, because if I don't know what genre something is, I may like it no matter what it turns out to be.

To answer your remaining questions:

Yes, there are plenty of artists who exceed the limitations I place on their genre, and I end up liking them anyway. For exmample, Eminem. Kanye West. Pink. Madonna.

There are a considerably larger number, however, of artists from genres I DO listen to, who make me want to change the radio when they come on. I find that a lot of rock/alternative/metal groups these days are sounding like the same old manufactured crap, and it's actually turned me more toward techno (which, I realize is ironic, due to much of techno sounding almost exactly the same). The difference with the techno, however, is that it's supposed to be repetative, and I can just get lost in the beat.

THe style of music does affect your choice. some people may not like a slow type of popular music, which moves on to the artists who have a faster beat. If you liked rap, then you wouldn't select a classical artist. The musical talent matters, but only after you have a genre. Most of the popular artists in your category are listened to, but some of the unpopular ones MAY have talent. There are a few musical prodigies out there that everyone will listen to sometime in their life and enjoy it, even if you don't like the type of music. Everyone has heard mozart, and everyone doesn't mind listening to it. the musical prodigies of the world have made people listen to different types of music.

yes, there really is music that will make you cringe and change the radio station or the TV channel. music that you are not used to listening to does that. In my case, i have never heard a japanese man sing, and when i do hear one, it does make me turn off my radio. as you listen to the music more, you will become used to it and not want to change the station.

I think two things. One is the music you grew up listening to as a kid, that was beyond your control. So sitting in the back seat of a car, with your parents controlling the radio, that kind of stuff might grow on you.

Secondly, a lot of people pick music that they think is popular, or will help them fit in with other people. I know with some of this crappy music out there, there is no way that people can really call it music, because it's trash, but it's what appeals to the whole counter-culture scene.

Then there are those people who think they have a deep understanding of music, and can tell you about all these great unheard of indie-bands that are really just mediocre. There is a reason some bands make it and some don't.

Of course their genre ifluences my opinion, see, 'cause I like Power Metal, which includes many virtuosos, as well as in guitars, as in keyboards drums and singing, but if I hear a rap song, then that makes me very uneasy becasue I just feel like the other musicians have worked so hard in their intruments that make them their talents, but if i hear 50 Cent, and he is jsut talking, then that dissapoints me. And rap makes me want to change the channel because I just do not feel that those people are as talented as some of the other ones I listen to. I just like to listen to talented music, even though I can't blame people that like music "because it has a good beat" or soemthing like that, and besides better musicians, and actual musicians, make more powerful music that can take me to places I know a rap song never would.

Music is much too subjective a subject to delineate into shoulds, however refinement of taste is shaped by a broad exposure of styles and genres. My personal preferences include jazz, blues, classical, folk, Christian artists, and pop rock. So much subjective choice forms what becomes delightful. I have heard that you can typify three categories of music: melody, harmony, and beat or rhythm. Melody is spiritually enlightening, harmony is emotive building, and the beat builds physical arousal and involvement. Music is a thing of the heart.

I choose my music by the way it makes me feel within. It is not something I focus on, I just know. I listen to many types of music, btw. I do notice that I will put something on that matches my mood if I am in a great one, or will put on some music that will make my mood shift if I am in a funk. When working on my art pieces, I may switch CDs or albums quite a bit if I am not quite in the perfect frame of mind to wander within (my best work is when I allow myself to just get lost in the work, and music gives me the way to do that). I don't even think of the artists who are playing the music, or even of the music itself, so much as where it takes me.

Primary factors... their voice, the song, the beat, everything... I find that there are artists who I like some of their songs, but not all. I listen to what I like and what makes me feel good when I hear it.

that depends. I think when you take on an instrument and embrace it from a different view, your tastes will evolve. There are rare people who listen to only what they like, and are not influenced by what others listen to, or just what they hear all the time.

Playing brings out what's in the heart, and let's your eyes see what's there.

It is all about talent. People who can not hear good talented musicians just suck as much as the artist/bands they listen to.
