I never had any problem putting a male Betta into a tank with other tropical fish. The problem can come when the other fish have long flowing fins that resemble a male Betta's. That can cause him to attack. Otherwise, I find them to be perfectly peaceful fish.
It could be because you're putting them into HIS tank, and he feels territorial. However, I can't imagine a Betta being able to eat another fish completely, leaving no trace. Are you checking on them daily? What other fish do you have in the tank? Are you sure they're not just dying and getting eaten by the other fish (which will happen and it's normal), or getting pushed behind a plant or under the gravel? I've had fish just completely disappear before, with no explanation. I assume that they died and were consumed by the others, or they just decomposed out of sight.

If the fishes mouth can fit around the other fish, then it will be eaten, every fish will eat a smaller fish, and a half gallon fishtank is small enough as it is, the only reason the bettas live in small amounts of water is becuase they are adapted to, not becuase they want to, it is very inhumane, it looks alot beter with room to move around, and will also create bubble nests for you if it is happy with its enviorment, but look online at www.aquariumadvice.com for a compatibility chart for fish.

yes. male bettas are preditors. and meat eaters. they don't like to be bothered by other fish, especially males. petsmart carries a little 1/2 gallon tank with a divider in the middle so you can have two fish in the same tank without them eating each other. you can put an opaque divider down so they can't see each other, or lift it so they can see through the clear plastic one, and they'll fan their fins. it's really neat.

Bettas will sometimes attack other fish. I have found them dead at the bottom of the tank, but I never seem to actually see the attack. As for disappearing, I have not know bettas to actually eat the other fish.

I've only had one betta who killed snails. In my experience some bettas get pretty antisocial if they've been the only fish in there tank. What sort of fish were they? What of betta is it? (Crown-tails are know to be more aggressive.)

no, betas only fight among themselves, if you have small fish which they may confuse for food this could happen but as a rule betas are not aggressive except toward each other, and only the males fight

most likely the betta did not eat them...the other fish (what were they?) may have gotten injured in fights with the betta, and the snails probably ate the remains...

sure the Betta will devour the goldfish foodstuff it isn't as nutritious in spite of the indisputable fact that it is going to keep up the fish. you should yet tropical fish foodstuff and combine both by technique of one area goldfish foodstuff to 2 parts of tropical fish foodstuff. (Flakes)
