eg: you have angelina jolie adopting children from other countries, you now have oprah winfrey planning a big bash in south africa. if they really want to contribute to society, why don't they help people in their home countries first? after all as the saying goes, charity begins at home. i feel they are more obsessed with the publicity that goes with it. what do you think?

You have explained it perfectly.
And besides, you can notice that no one of them emphasize the need to educate people!!!
That would solve the problem in the long term.
They just like to glue patches and don't go to the root of the problem.
Tell people that is not possible to raise 12 kids properly...
Tell people that they have to work to make a living...
Bono and Sting apply to that too...

Home is planet Earth. What celebrity in Africa is rich enough to contribute to the need there?

I am so glad celebrities of today are looking beyond the glimmer and glamour of Hollywood and making such a big difference in the lives of needy children AND adults in Third World Countries. They have the finances and the resources, so more power to 'em!

I can't hop on a plane and help the starving in Africa...I can't adopt a child with no future from another country....but I can volunteer at shelters and with the Red Cross and with Habitat for Humanity here in the U.S. I can do whatever my (currently, meager) means allow me to do.

Those of us who have need to share with those who have not, where ever they are.

So what if the celebs are obsessed with publicity? They went into acting careers. Publicity is their bag. Meanwhile, they're feeding children. That's what matters.

The reason will strike you as strange. 1) Celebrities have less leeway then you think, they are under the thumb, and 2) The thumb says- support Africa. But this is not out of loving kindness, but because poverty and a large population living in proximity to livestock is like a high-powered Viral-mutation laboratory. In modern times, Africans travel, so we are not immune to this laboratory. Hence we need to upregulate interest in Africa, so we can eventually find ways to limit spread of new viruses.

It really has more to do with international opinion of Americans rather than individual public relations attempts of the celebrities themselves.

In the last decade or so, Hollywood-folk has discovered that a lot more of their income is starting to come from overseas. Also, in the last decade, international views of Americans have been on a gradual decline.

So, to counter the fact that these humanitarian celebrities are Americans themselves, to get the biggest bang for their PR buck, they head our of country so the Paparazzi can see them hand-fedding zebras, rather than giving Raggedy-Anne dolls to underprivileged Americans.

Its just more cost effective for them to outsource their philanthropy

Because they have so much money and material possessions, and people kissing their *ss each and every day, so they do it to feel better about themselves and to justify that they deserve all that they have.

They probably think "Well I have a gazillion dollars, but I try to help people in poor countries so I deserve it. I'm not a bad person."

i don't know but it really bothers me... i know adoption is easier going to these countries especially for single parents but you may be right about the publicity i mean would the media recognize someone who threw a gala for homeless in the USA?
(I think the problem is people have gotten so used to the problems we have in our own countries that they really are't considered problems anymore,so no publicity comes from suppoting your own country.)
