Whenever I'm out in traffic, courteously cruising at what appears to be the unspoken rule of honour "always 20% above the speed limit", I can't help but feel that a lot of people seem to have taken a vow to never be seen driving in a less than entirely over-confident way. It seems like they would be mortified having to admit that they are taking it slower today (i.e., not exceeding the speed limit, driving courteously, turning with appropriate care, and keeping their distance) for good reason. Is there an unspoken rule that whoever is not seen breaking the rules loses face?

Yes. In our society, competitive, aggressive people value a sense of urgency, and speeding in a vehicle is considered a manifestation of this trait. Only after suffering through a near-fatal accident does one truly appreciate how flawed this logic is.

No. you have to think in terms of safety and energy consumption too. If you're with your loved ones, would you drive fast even if you're the most confident F1 racer in the world? However, if you're going down a hill, would you use the first gear? Breaking the rules is not all about speed. Im sure you'd be pissed if somebody just irresponsbly cut your lane irregardless of which speed. Thats just how things goes and if in you're in a soceity where the drivers just break the rules a little, be grateful for it because if you're in a soceity where there are seemingly no rules at all (philippines) you'll learn to appreciate it more.

Yes, slow drivers are road kill on the road today. This is why many states have passed so many laws with regards to "keeping with normal traffic" ... see if traffic is all moving at 70 mph and your driving at 55 mph then you are the road hazard, and in most states, a cop can ticket you for being a hazard.

Additionally, our state just passed a law that keeps slow drivers in the slow lane ... if you perpetually drive in the fast lane without ever swiching to the slow lane, then you're breaking the law ... this allows traffic to move along ... we've had too many wanna-be-cops try and block the roads and our state has voted to make these road blockers a road violations worthy of a ticket!!!

It sounds like it's been a historic time since you took your driving test ... I bet you could use a refresher course ... don't think of it as bad, but an opportunity to see what society is learning in regards to road safty --- these are not the roads during the 1950's and roads too have evolved into their own creatures.

I totally agree!! I was at the grocery store the other day, backing out of a parking space slowly (it was busy and there was a huge green van on one side!) and my mom (in the passenger seat) was yelling at me to hurry up! It was her car...you'd think she'd WANT me to be more careful! It's horrible around here (MI)! You can't even slow down for the railroad tracks without getting honked at!

And it is NOT safer to drive the same speed as everyone else...it's safer to go slower and stay out of the "rat pack."
