A bachelor's in social work is the best. You could become a social worker with a psychology or sociology degree but that will limit you in what career fields you can do. A BSW can do a lot of different things and if you get a Master's in Social Work the possibilities are practically limitless

Social workers who have bachelor’s degrees in social work earn annual salaries that range from the high $30,000s to the low $40,000s, Wong said.
Many social workers go beyond the bachelor’s degree to earn a Master of Social Work degree. They work with the most difficult populations, doing counseling and therapy, Wong said. For instance, a social worker with a master’s degree may team with a police officer, cruising the streets to build relationships with homeless people.

Volunteer at a local nursing home and see if you like it first. Talk to the Social Workers. They will guide you. It is a tough job but then to each their own.

BA or BS should do it.
I don't think the major even matters.. Social workers are in high demand and NOBODY wants those jobs. Janitors get more respect. Good Luck!
