Seriously, working at a record store, I have no clue. I do think, on the metal front, that power metal/prog/Dragonforce-type /Blind Guardian will catch on to all the kiddies. Hardcore is going VERY VERY stale, Death and Black metal are still going strong, but mainly the classics like Berzum/Satryicon/etc etc sell.
As for the top 40 stuff. The same ol' same ol' will always capture an audience, no matter what the age. You can put out pop songs left and right and SOMEONE will like them, there will be no new 'next big thing' in pop (at least sound wise..band wise, yes there will be) for years and years to come. Ok, i'm rambling and I'll stop.

The "next big thing" in music will be what it has always been: a conglameration and synthesization of various older styles of music. There is nothing "new"...There is only newly discovered.

I think international will be the next big thing. Techno-Brazilian?! Some kind of fusion latin sound (a modern version of the soundtrack to "The Specialist" back in the 90's?)

Punk and Rap have been kicking around in second and third place for 20 years. That's too old to take over! Rock and roll is here to stay --but at over 50 it is grey -- too grey.

You're asking, "What is the new rock? Who'se the new Fats Domino?" Gota be international, if it were inside the USA or UK it would have already taken over.

The strikes, backbeat and garments were an same on account that YO MTV Raps got here on the air back interior the day. enable's desire for a rock revival or perchance even dance/domicile/techno. something yet rap. heavily, I kinda imagine the recent united states will finally end up to be the recent "Pop" music.

I would like to see Alternative Doo-Wop or even Psychedelic Doo-Wop come in as a major musical force. Doo-Wop died with the 1964 British invasion. It had a shorter life than Rap yet both Rap and doo-wop share the same roots, ie: they evolved in the streets of New York. Hints of a possible Doo-Wop/Alternative blend have surfaced intermittently as in "The Scarlet Thing in You" by Peter Murphy and more notably in "Zephyr" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you could get some great black artists with vocal talents comparable to the Penguins or Clyde McPhatter's Drifters (Mid-'50's) to back some great alternative bands a whole new genre could open up.

I think retro rock is going to come back. More hard rock like the 70s and 80s type bands, some old style punk, maybe some more bristish invasion kind of rock. As long as boys bands don't come back for a while.
