we used to do this and there wasn't any effect on the goldfish. I can see why you would want to do this because some filter motors are very noisy. Better yet would be for you to get a quieter filter or insulate it some way so that the noise is dampened. you haven't mentioned if you have an air pump, if you leave your air pump running then you definitely could turn off the filter overnight. try to keep some water circulating at all times in some way or another.

It depends on the size of the tank and the number and size of the fish. Try turning it off sometime during the day and seeing if the fish are gasping for air after 8 hours.

I WOULDN'T , because the fish then have to keep coming up to the surface for air all night. Otherwise, they kinda just float in the water because the air bubbles put oxygen into the water and the air-action moves these micro air pockets around the tank or bowl. The fish's gills will absorb the air that they need to stay alive and/or healthy

Don't do it. What if one morning you got too busy and forgot to turn it back on? Then you come home to a tank full of dead fish. I have a 46 gal. salt water tank and we lost electricity once and I started to panic. I told my husband he better do something cuz I only have two hours. I only allow two hours with no water flow. The same as when I do my water changes. It takes about two hours. (that includes my 10 gal quarantine tank). You wouldn't like it being in a small room or box for eight hours with no fresh air flow.

Of course you can but if you want your fish to live then no. Turning the filter off can harm the beneficial bacteria that keeps your tank cycled which keeps your fish from being poisoned to death from their waste.

yes, but its not good for them. I would leave it on. It doesnt use a lot of electricity, and shouldnt be very noisy. They need the filter to deliver oxygen to the water, (not so much clear debris) If you unplug it for more than a few hours your fish will get very stressed. email me for more related questions. cmillmier@aol.com

most likely the reason u want to do this is bc of the noise the filter makes. try adding more water to it to raise the tank's water level. the closer the water line is to the filter itself, the quieter it will b. good luck

you really don't want to risk that. the filter should be moist at all times for bacterial growth and in order for that to happen it needs to be on. otherwise your filter won't build up enough good bacteria to break down fish waste.

no, toxins build up in the water even while the pump runs all the time.to do that you will have to do more frequent water changes, every 2 or 3 days.
