Simple, How do a cell phone works? It works from the charged battery. It's the same way how a land phone works. But the battery(generator) is not inside the land phone. But it is in the telephone exchange or the control room. I think U know that land phone or cell phone works with power. But they didn't required a huge power. Hence a generator in a control room is enough to maintain. You can find this when there is a power failure go to the telephone exchange or control room in your area. I am sure you can find this.
