There are programs that write the code to generate other programs. Most of the compilers come with this feature.

Usually, what they do is write a shell program and you still need a programmer to provide the functionality. We are still a long way from A.I.

See the wikipedia article on genetic programming, and the one on Lisp, the programming language. Lisp was designed to make programs to write programs. There's actually some slow progress in this area.

There are lots and lots of programs which write other programs. Back in the ancient days of computers it was a badge of honor to write self modifying code. That was a program that modified itself while it was running.

Yes, this has been tried already.

This confuses two things -- artificial intelligence and artificial life.

"Making copies of itself" does not make something intelligent, but every form of life does this.
