49 years ago, some guy tried to float into the atmosphere with a giant helium baloon, and he made it 100,000 feet, he landed in South Dakota. Here is a link, anyone else AMAZED? Crazy.

yeah, i heard about that guy before.

even weirder is that the weather balloons that meteorologists use expand to the size of a house when they reach the stratosphere.

Yeah. That was a DOCTOR in that capsule underneath that balloon. No one had ever gone 20 miles up into the sky at that time (1957). We didn't know much about the upper stratosphere and about breathing and working at such an altitude.

It was an important precursor to manned space flight.
