I mean besides being double, what does it mean? I have DSL, and usually download about about 350 KB/sec. does this have anything to do with it? thanks.

thought i'd post my Download and upload speeds according to a speed test:
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-07-08 02:00:17 EST:
2450 / 422
Your download speed : 2450 kbps or 306.2 KB/sec.
That is 15.2% better than an average user on
Your upload speed : 422 kbps or 52.8 KB/sec.
That is 1.4% better than an average user on

The 54 Mbps is the maximum speed that a standard 802.11g router and wireless client can communicate over a very short range and optimal conditions. In reality, your transfer speed will be less, usually much less, like around 11 Mbps. The 108 Mbps router uses non-standard methods to boost the maximum speed to a theoretical 108 Mbps, again, this is not a speed you will likely ever see.
Because the method used to increase this speed is non-standard, you will only see any increase if you have the matching wireless card from the same company in your PC. If you are using a factory supplied wireless interface built into a laptop, this will only support the standard g speeds. So only buy a 108 router if you plan on buying the matching cards, otherwise you are wasting your money paying extra for something you won't be able to take advantage of.
One final point, the speed of your Internet DSL is usually 3-5 Mbps download/ 384 Kbsp upload. This is the fastest you can talk to the Internet no matter how fast the wireless connection is. So if most of your traffic is to the Internet, the g standard is plenty fast. If you do lots of networking between PCs in your local network, then you can use the faster speed.
They both use the same encryption standards and neither has better reliability over the other.

True speed of these cards would be a factor of 8 ie you have to divide the speeds by 8. So the 54 mbps should offer 6.75 on LAN. The 108 should offer 13.5mbps.The internet speed depends on the traffic in your network.

Aside from the difference in the speed the 108 MBS is much more secure than 54 mbps when using encryption actually the speed of your connection will depend on the signal 54 mbps and 108 mbps is the max signal you can get. that is between your computer and the access point .

For DSL, 350 is on the slower side. If you were running a higher speed internet like Cable or optical then 54/108 would make a difference but with a slower DSL it doesn't. You should contact your provider and see what speed you are supposed to be running at.

It doesn't matter if your router is 54MBPS or 104MBPS, both are fast enough for your DSL connection, but if your have more than one computer and you share files between them or you want transfer information to another device like an wireless external hard drive, the router with 108Mbps will transfer files faster than the 54Mbps, faster than a wired network.
