Like any tool, it can be used for good or bad deeds. (The "gun in the hands of a hunter vs. the gun in the hands of the criminal" argument again.) If it is used in a good way, it will be a good thing, if it is used in a bad way it will be a bad thing.

As far as it costing people jobs, I do not think that will be that much of an issue if society adjusts, as it usually does eventually, to the new developments. With the advent of farming machinery people were free to get off the farm and do other work and pursue progress in other fields, so, yes, automation did cost jobs, initially. Eventually society adjusted.

It would do the same with A.I.

As far as the hogwash about computers taking over the planet at the expense of humans, why would they do that? What would their motivations be? And, more importantly, who would be the idiot that would put those motivations there to begin with?

The desire to control is a derivative of the desire to survive. If a computer never is programmed with the instinct to survive, it will not likely develop the desire to control. People have the rather annoying habit of putting human emotions and motivations where they have no place being, and since an artificial intelligence is built from the ground up, such motivations would not be there unless they were put there intentionally.

C: None of the above.

It will happen provided we continue with computer development on some scale. The question is what is AI? At what point does an self awareness become an intellect?

Personally I can see pros and cons for both. Computers "think" much more quickly than we can with much more tenacity. However they can only think as smart as the person that programed them. It could be responsible for exponential growth in our scientific knowledge due to the fact that they can do what modern computers can't, they could take an educated guess on something and follow it to it's logical conclusion without bias based on moral, ethical, religious or political concerns. Of course the cons would be the "new Battlestar Galactica", "Terminator" or "I, Robot" scenarios where they decide that we are too self-destructive or very logically assume a fight or flight response for self preservation once we discovered that it became self aware and most likely try to shut it down before one of the bad scenarios could happen. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

In a religious aspect of playing god by creating "life"....i dunno but there are enough smart people out there messing with this stuff intentionally that it will happen...and may already have accidentally....the internet would be a prime candidate.

It's a good idea because there is no such thing as artificial intelligence. Either it is intelligent, or not. Ironically, the study of "AI" should bring us to a closer understanding of our own brain functions.

I think it would be very beneficial. The only "bad" thing I can think of is that millions of jobs will be taken by low-cost A.Is. Read "The singularity is near" for a full understanding of Artificial Intelligence and then decide for yourself, :D.

i would have to offer that it is inevitable and requiredand a good thing.why? because as all of you know, you get driven to blow money on new computer equipment now and again because the new software runs like crap on your old stuff or the game plays choppy etc...so the need for speed is obvous, what may not be obvous to the non-technical is that our brains have the same limitation.they have a countable number of components, which by this very fact means that the capabilities and number of things that can be accomplished are limited. a brain cannot set itself into an infinite number of states,it does not posses infinite memory capacity and its speed is certainly questionable :) so this leaves us with the eventual need for a hardware upgrade which of course will be external. This already happens now at places like Intel and AMD.Modern microprocessors are too complicated to be built without the aid of computers, regardless of how many engineers we throw at the task.Modern Systems-On-A-Chip are also built only because we have computer assistance. In many ways, our limits have already been reached and because of computer systems and automated problem solving we are able to work beyond our natural capacity.
So as our engineering capability improves and the size of our computers grow,we will eventually build computers with greater capability than ourselves, even as a collective, and they -using artificial intelligence- or more accurately the codifying of the mechanisms of automated problem solving, will begin to carry on our original work but on a much more capable scale. planet sized computers will become reality, without doubt. the force of gravity will be the only boundry set on size and this can be worked around by networking them together, yeah you guessed it, galaxy sized computers will one day become a reality, lets just hope they dont take as long to boot as windows eh?

It depends on your perspective.

If I am a terrorist being hunted by a smart bomb, it's bad.

If I am a data analyzer looking for trends, it's good.

If I am a sci-fi writer looking for a plot, it's very good!

OK, all joking aside, there is no "terminator" syndrome around the corner. AI exists already. Just look no further than your car.

It's just a strategy for programming with a cool name, silly boy.

That's the difference between science fact and science fiction.
