Sexual orientation and gender identity are two seperate subjects. Forget for a minute who you are attracted to - who do you feel you are? A transsexual knows, or feels strongly, that their true gender (what they know themselves to be in their brain) does not match their body, and they must bring the two in alignment. A transsexual, by definition, is at the extreme end of the transgender spectrum because sooner or later most must make some kind of physical transition. It beomces a matter where life isn't worth living because it feels so very wrong. You feel invisible because no one can see the "real you". No one chooses to be transsexual, same as no one chooses to be gay. If you think you could be transgendered talk with a therapist who specializes in transgender issues, or join a yahoo group for transgendered people. They can help you sort out your feelings.

because they don't feel like one sex trapped in another sexes body. that is a layman's term to make it easier for the general population to understand.
for a transsexual, they look at it as they were deformed physically-not meaning this in a deterogory way. a sex change isn't about becoming the opposite sex so that they can be seen as "normal" while pursuing a relationship with the sex that they just left. many transexuals actually pursue members of the opposite sex before and during their sex change. i dated a FtoM transexual for a brief time, and for him it wasn't about becoming a man so that he could be seen as normal. he was becoming a man to be on the outside what he felt like on the inside. he was a wonderful man and i wish him the best of luck.
now, you identifying with what a woman goes through, doesn't mean you know what a woman really goes through-nor do you want to be a woman, and for you that's what you deem normal.
transpeople just want to feel normal to themselves.

Sometimes I think that many gay ppl have thoughts of wanting to be the opposite sex. I think to actually go through with an operation would be extremely hard to do and you would have to have exhausted all possible avenues of help.
I think it all depends on your life and upbringing. Many have nothing to loose, their family hates them for being gay, they have no friends, no life, and no other areas of social acceptance so they start over and move away. How many transsexuals actually live where they grew up. There's a reason for that.

Well, transexuals experience more than just thinking about being the opposite gender. They truly feel they were born to the wrong body. Their sex organs feel foreign to them and they are very unhappy with their gender. It's extreme enough for them that they can't possibly stand to be the gender they are.

Because they feel very strongly that they are female. They cannot stand being a man because they think they are living a lie. It works that way for females who want sex changes also.

Because they truly do not feel that they are not their aparent gender. They identify with the opposite sex.
