Oil and the offhand wastes of refining are far to lucrative to be completely suspended. ethanol production stems as far back as 50 or so years ago and was rejected then. It has only been recently considered as an additive to gasoline because of the fear of depleting the resources we have become acustomed to. This is also a contributing factor to the outrageous prices at the pump because the earlier rejection of its use waylayed the necessary technology to produce it in the amounts we are demanding today, so there you go.

Big money. Carol Shelby, the builder of the 1960's Shelby Cobras (including the ever popular AC Cobra) tried to get the Government to switch cars over to Propane around 1970. Cheaper fuel & burns clean without smog control equipment. Would also have allowed for high performance cars to be built during the 1970's. They turned him down.
