I want to move to a small town, not super small like there is a gas station, store and laundry mat all in the same building but one that's population isn't over five thousand or so. Yes I know that sounds like a big town but I did see a town with population 9000 and it only had four streets.

Check out these two towns for a possible move: Durango, Colorado and Crescent City, California. I checked out new places to move for 10 years, including moving to these towns among others, and these two are my favorites.

I live in a small town sorrounded by nothing, but I'd have to say, as long at the geographical area has something to offer, like hiking, camping, water activies, site seeing, things like that, then it's great. It's really nice and humbling when you know that half the town knows each other. There's a different element of trust there. Just be ware, if you're not used to small town living, it could be a bit of a culture shock, but if you can make it past 6 months to a year, you'll do just fine. And, believe it or not, the public schools seem to be better in small towns. Don't quite know why, but they are. My little boy is in graded school and they are way ahead here than his last school in a much bigger city. I think you'll love it. But don't forget to do your research on some cities you're considering. ;)

There's alot to be said for small towns. The mentality is totally different than that of the big city. Much better, friendlier, people seem to care more, probably because more of them know each other. That's also the probable reason why kids do better in school, the teachers care more because they're friends with these kids' families. Sure if it's a dinky town you have to travel to do most things, but you can go a mite bigger than 5,000 and still be small. There are lots of small towns in the larger area where I live. Many I would love to live in. It is a beautiful area too. Lots of things to do.

Oklahoma has some nice small towns. Ft. Gibson, Oktaha and Checotah are pretty nice. Ft. Gibson is the nicest but maybe not as small as what you're talking about. Oktaha and Ft. Gibson are both 20 min or so from Muskogee which is a bigger town so if you want a mall its not too far. And if you need more big city stuff Tulsa is 1 hour and OKC is 2-2 1/2.

5000 isn't large at all. But if you want to move to a small town there are other things to consider. No conveniences. Wal-Mart for us is an hour away, as is the dry cleaners, fast food, ect. Since we are not on a major trucking route, prices for goods and services here are outrageous. The hospital is also an hour away. We have one fast food place (Subway) and two grocery stores (not super). We also pay 3.29 a gallon for gas, and $30.00 for a small bar-b-que propane tank. Everyone knows everyone and likes to talk about it. Plus, there isn’t a whole lot for the kids to do here. I guess there’s good and bad and it depends on where the small town is.

I live in Tea, SD...It is about that size but very safe. We have Subway, two gas stations, a Pizza Ranch, Tea Steak House, three bars, a nice pool, a grocery store, and four hair salons. The other nice thing is we live next to Sioux Falls and there are many job oppertunties like Citibank and other big corps.

There is no inbreeding and it is not a hick town

Go to New York State. New York is the only state that still has large number of hamlets. Why don't you try Houghton, NY or its surrounding area?
