I read about some guy who gutted his old VCR and turned it into a DVR with regular computer parts (Hard drive, Mobo, DVD-RW drive, etc). He then installed Linux and freevo on it.

The best way is to use your computer. Get a WinTV card or USB TV tuner that comes with DVR software. Try Hauppauge.com. You can hook the output up to you TV and it will work the same as a DVR.
