You can do a fairly decent clean by using your vacuum cleaner. That will get the dust and dirt out of the vents, and you can run the hose part way into the vent pipes. Make sure you change the filters on your air vents regularily -- that makes a real difference!

I hire a company to do this (usually carpet cleaning companies also clean vents). They have a big vacuum that can do the job best.
