He didn't. Don't feel bad, that a common misconception. See he had an "old" series XJ-1200, which ran on a gasoline cold fusion engine. But you see most people think he had the "new" XJ-1350 which runs on crystal energy. When he put the crystals in the machine simply jumped to a different time.
Wait, what year is this? Has time travel been discovered yet?

I don't know, there was some meaning behind that, because they focused the camera on them. I really don't know.
