He didn't. Don't feel bad, that a common misconception. See he had an "old" series XJ-1200, which ran on a gasoline cold fusion engine. But you see most people think he had the "new" XJ-1350 which runs on crystal energy. When he put the crystals in the machine simply jumped to a different time.
