need a 2wd tranny and i have a few 4wd ones just not sure if they are close to the same besides the tailhousing

I'll have to give it to marty on this one, it is the same tranny except for the tail section.

Sure but you need the output shaft and tail piece from a 2wd. Other down side is the output shaft is the first piece into the transmission case and last piece to come out. In other words the whole thing has to come apart to change the shaft. Not really practical unless you damaged your case and were planning on a rebuild anyway.

internals may be the same, but the 4wd case is heavier.
you will also notice your 2wd flywheel cover is stamped steel, and the 4wd piece is cast aluminum.

you will need to have a different tail shaft and housing from a 2wd installed.

The 4wd has a shorter output shaft than the 2wd.

Yes they are the same. If you're swapping them out make sure you change that big O-ring that goes around the tailhousing. They get pretty old and brittle sometimes.
