Isn't it strange that people demand vehicles with top speeds in excess of what they can ever hope to drive legally? Isn't this a bit childish, and a thrown away chance to develop vehicles with better fuel economy?

Who says everyone choses to obey the law. They also make cars that are able to park in front of fire hydrants. So what?

For some people there really isn't any sweeter sound than the sound of a big Made in Detroit V8 engine being pushed into the red down an open stretch of highway. Different people always have their different "things." My family's is our muscle cars and SUVs. Don't give me crap about gas though, I burn E85 Ethonal in my Tahoe.

American vehicle, enviromental friendly American Fuel, American passion, American Muscle. Not much of my income leaves our nation for a asian or middle eastern one.

So the next time someone in a Prius (still burns gasoline only)gives me a very dirty look I will look down on their little death box of a car, laugh, think about how I've kept everything in country, and then floor it while litterally leaving the prius in a cloud of smoke.

For some people their car is just another member of their family and they love to go fast. I'm sure you have some little "thing" that a lot of people do not understand just as you don't understand many people's passion for a fast and a agressive American Muscle car.

Well I don't know if you are aware of this, but I can go faster than the speed limit. It sounds strange but if I try to, the car doesn't hit the brakes automatically and slow me down to a safe speed. I drive a Toyota Tacoma but I also have a 1985 Porsche 911 turbo, and you know what? There are these great places called race tracks!! I can go there, pay a bit of money, and drive around like crazy and there are no speed limits!! I have fun out there, I get to drive fast and improve my reflexes, I get all that speed freak adrenaline out of me in a safe and controlled environment. Millions of people use race tracks, ever think of that? A Toyota Echo is a small, economical car that can easily travel faster than the speed limit. Sometimes speed is necessary to be safe. Or what if someone needs to drive their pregnant wife to the hospital. Or what about Ambulances, Fire trucks, Police cars. They need to drive fast. Try to consider all aspects of a question before you post it.

People in America are less practical, but don't confuse what is the law, and what is morally right or wrong.

In Germany, they have NO speed limits, yet have fewer deaths per mile driven than us Americans, because they actually are trained to drive, verus here with $10, and a pulse, and your on the road.

Yes, my Porsche 911 can exceed the national limit very quickly, as I often when driving up to Canada find roads which match the ability of the car, then I let it rip. Some people climb rocks, or jump out of planes for excitement. For those who love to drive(and not to be seen), it is nothing short of nirvanna.

It's just a "thing" I can't really describe it any way. A similar example would be owning a big house. People always do fine in the houses they're in right now. Why upgrade if you, on a base level, don't need to? Because it's just nice to have a bigger and nicer house. Same thing applies to cars. It's just nice to have a faster car. Bragging rights. "Look at me". Sure, it's childish. But look at almost everything that people do. On some level it's all childish.

Obviously not a car person.

You also make the assumption that those of us who like to drive fast actually care about what's "legal" when it comes to a speed limit. Legal is only what you can get away with.

Fuel economy is for chicks. You drive the Prius, I'll drive the Bmer.

it's fun. Is fun childish? I'm pretty sure adults have fun too. The people throwing away the opportunity for better cars is the car makers. THEY are the one's making the cares, regardless of what consumers want. Just cause that's what people want doesn't mean that's what car makers have to make. Car makers are the childish ones. Greedy jerks.

It's not a waste. It suits a selfish purpose.

Right ON!!! And they are so pig-headed about their right to consume irresponsibly without a care to the kind of future that their children will inheret... I mean, why save for their tertiary education if what they are going to "enjoy" is a neo-fuedalist society.
