(Revised from previous question).
A speeding train without a conductor is headed on a track towards 10 people who are tied down to the track. Right before the train would run over these people, there is a track that branches off. On this other track is 1 person tied down to it.

You cannot stop the train. However, you have a lever in your hand which can alter the train's path towards the 1 person if you pull it. Otherwise, the train heads toward the 10 people.

Do you pull the switch, knowing that you will have directly caused the death of an innocent person?

if i can see 10 very old men over a young life i won't pull the lever cause the younger have more potential to fulfill the dreams of the ten who die.

however in any other situation i will pull the lever, even if its kin or loved ones. the guilt carried in killing 1 will far less than killing 10.

Easy, pull the damn lever!

It is not up the the lever holder to "verify" the goodness of the lives saved. Who on this earth is qualified to make that kind of decision?

Pulling the lever creates the greatest good, regardless of any consequences.

Cool question. I would like to say of course but I'm not sure i could do it when push came to shove. What if that one person is someone I know and right before they die they know I am responsible. What a hard decision that would have to be. Or what if it's ten people i don't like could I be that cold hearted? I'd like to think i would sacrifice the one but honestly unless that came up who knows?

what if that one person was Einstein? could a single life do more to save/help billions of others than 10? what if some of those 10 were children? is their potential worth more than a grown adult? in a moment of panic can you really make the right call? I think if there were kids/kid involved I'd save the kids/kid and hope like hell they/he didn't grow up to be Hitler! but what if they were all children.....

it depends if the 10 people were bad people or people that i didn't like and the 1 was my true love, i would sacrifice the 10.
but then again if the 10 people were my family and the 1 was my true love I would sacrifice him.
