why is it that a woman has the right to do what she wants to her body when it concerns abortion, but when she want a tubal to PREVENT pregnancy she no longer has the freedome to do what she wants to her body, unless she already has 2 kids??????is it just me, or does this make you think they would rather you kill a baby than make the wrong choice to steralize yourself?!

To me these two aren't in the same category. The risk involved in both surgeries are very different and the outcome is equally different.

Well first off both are a woman's choice. Second once you have an abortion that's it - pregnancy terminated; however with tubal ligation there is the option to have it reversed. Many doctors want a woman to be sure that either choice is what she really wants, that's why many abortion clinics make you come in for a consultation and then wait 24-48 hours before they actually do the procedure. With a tubal, the surgery is MUCH more invasive than the surgery for an abortion, and having a reversal is even more invasive. So with that being said doctors are reluctant to do a tubal based on either the local law or their ethical beliefs.

I have to admit I am pro choice, so I don't see anything wrong with abortion (PLEASE don't email me regarding MY personal beliefs) I also think that a woman SHOULD be allowed to have her tubes tied if/when SHE wants to regardless of age or number of past pregnancies. I even believe that insurance SHOULD pay for birth control pills and devices as well as sterilization procedures.

That is a very good point, I haven't ever thought of that. I have one child and am very adamant at this point to not have another one. I had my first child and only child thus far when I was 22 and after wards I asked them about getting my tubes tied. My doctor told me that because I was so young and could possibly want more kids in the future that he wasn't going to do it...even after I assured him I didn't want anymore. I personally am against abortion except in extreme cases, but like you I don't agree with the fact that you can't choose what you want to do as far as not having more children until you are past a certain age or have had at least 2 kids. That is the reason so many girls get themselves into situations they don't want to be in..and then people wonder why there are so many young girls getting pregnant who don't want to be mothers and doing harm to their children. There are amazing medical breakthroughs happening all the time...I feel like if I choose to have my tubes tied after I have a child or before for that matter that is my choice...there is nothing saying that it can't be successfully reversed if I or any woman decides later down the line to have another child. Great question...should make people think a little harder on where they stand...doctors included. It is your body, should be your choice either way.

I totally agree with your thinking. However, a little aside from the topic, if it's birth control you're looking for, do some research on the Mirena. I have one. It's an IUD that lasts for five years. It's a little white one inch T-shaped piece of plastic they insert right up close to your cervix (can never feel it once it's in). It sends off certain hormones that kill off sperm before they even enter your cervix to get into your fallopian tubes. It has some side effects at first for the first month or so, a little cramping, BUT the best side effect at all is NO PERIODS!! That's right, no periods! Some women experience light spottings on their cycles, but most have none at all. I have had this Mirena since 2002 and have not had a single period. Look into it.

But, I have to mention again, I agree with your case in point.

I think it depends on where you live as to what the "rules" are when a tubal is allowed.

Here in my town I was told I had to be 26 OR have 3 kids to have it done.

However it can ALWAYS be "petitioned" (so to speak) and the doctors will HAVE no choice but to do as the mother wishes.

I know women here who are younger than 26 and have less than 3 kids and were allowed to get it done.

The MAIN reason they make limitations is because it is permanent and they don't want women making rash decisions that can effect the rest of their lives. It "can" be reversed nowadays but it is costly and not guaranteed. So they set restrictions to make it so women don't regret it down the road.

A lot of doctors won't do it on someone under the age of 25 because too many women come back and want to have the reversal done. This is why there are so many different kinds of birth control out there. If a woman is on the pill or using the spericidal gel along with condoms the liklyhood of pregnancy is very slim.

I do think that people that don't want kids at all should be allowed to get their tubes tied or the man should also get fixed.

Where i live you have to have one kid and be 21 to have your tubes tied.

But it is every woman's right to choose what to do when it comes to abortion.
