Know what you really are and be able to put it into simple, believable words. Of course, this requires you to KNOW what you are and where you're coming from. Convert enough strangers into friends and you will run out of enemies.
This becomes much easier when you establish a solid belief system. Do you have something huge and permanent to be part of yet?

Typically when someone insults another person, the insulter usually says things that would hurt their own feelings, if said to them. So, knowing that, I would probably just recommend turning it around on the insulter or avoid/ignore the insulter altogether. I wouldn't worry about what most people think though because some people are just assholes.
