I doubt any of the negative answers you receive are actually from social workers. I am one and I can tell you that it's the most versatile career you can find. I do statistics in my social work job, determining the effectiveness of our social service programs. I can be an administrator or a case manager or a program director.
Almost every workplace is interesting and rewarding and that's a lie that you'll end up in government work. Most social workers are employed by private entities.
Good luck in your career! You'll love it!

You will not make much money, and will end up in a government position if you have a career. You need to check how many people do it and how many openings tehre are where you desire to live.
