Try to save some money, find a job and try to cut down on expenses. Maybe find a roommate or something to help keep rent more reasonable. It can be a shock how expensive it is in San Diego for someone coming from somewhere else, but lots of people make it work. It would really help to find a job. While it is more expensive to live in San Diego, most of the jobs pay more too. It would also help to be willing to live in less expensive areas of the city, not areas that are unsafe, but many suburbs are considerably less expensive than trying to live downtown. Check out North County (especially San Marcos and Vista) or East County (La Mesa, El Cajon, Rancho San Diego, Alpine, etc), I believe those areas are the cheapest pretty good neighborhoods. Also keep in mind that the closer you are to the beach, the more expensive it will be.

First of all, I can't even believe you would ask a question like, "Do I have to marry a rich guy???"!!! Sister friend, NEVER marry a man for money-make your own! Please don't set the women's movement back a hundred years! Secondly, the person who answered before me mentioned Rancho San Diego as cheaper??? NO WAY! And you do NOT want to live in Alpine, trust me! It's hickville in the middle of nowhere! La Mesa is okay, El Cajon is not the greatest neighborhood. Neither are San Marcos or Vista not to mention the fact that they are about 45 mins. to an hour north of San Diego. Someone else mentioned Oceanside-fine if you're a Marine. Again, an hour from San Diego and not the greatest neighborhood. If you want the most from your San Diego experience you're going to have to suck it up like the rest of us and make it work in the city. I also don't know what this person is talking about regarding jobs out here paying more-they most certainly do not. Maybe more than they would in Nebraska, but certainly not in proportion to the cost of living.
The way I did it was I worked for five and a half years and saved alot. I had a great 401K plan with my employer, who matched, and was able to pull money out of that (just be aware that you need to set some of the money aside to pay taxes on it or you'll be in a world of hurt!!!). I used the money I had saved to finance the move out here (from Boston!) and to support myself while I looked for a job although in hind sight I would recommend finding the job first! I also found a roommate online (roommateaccess.com) before I moved and I live near La Mesa, which is more affordable than some other areas of San Diego but be aware that all areas are going to be considerably more expensive than what you're used to.
You could also apply to a school out here. Assuming you get in, and can somehow afford the tuition, you'd be able to get room and board at the school. I think a lot of students come out here for school and end up staying.
Why is it so expensive? Land is at a premium. There's only so much of it and everyone wants a piece of it out here because of the fabulous weather and the friendly people and the easy going, laid back lifestyle. Unfortunately though, as I mentioned, the payscale out here is in gross disproportion to the cost of living-be forewarned!
Good luck!

I spent time in San Diego also and in Monterey. I too fell in love with CA. I too cant afford to live there. So, I have no suggestions aside from marrying a Californian who is already established there; but only for love. If someone else gives you a good suggestion though, let me know. Good luck.

i agree save up at least $5000 then give it a try, i know it sound like a lot but rent is about $800 for 1 bed 1 bath and $1700 for 2 and 2 but then are more expensive areas and cheaper areas try a cheap one like ummmm oceanside , and find a job that you can do anywhere, data entry, nurse, hay even flippin a burger , or marry a Marine or Salior (j/k) but I've lived all over southern cali and i agree it's a little nicer here. Or You can always just keep visiting .

Well I live here in California-and I hate it- I myself am moving to Florida in about 1 year and a half. When moving there's only one thing to keep in mind-MONEY. Save up as much as you possibly can-this way if there is a lapse in income you have savings. There's nothing you can do about the price of California-just save as much as you can.
