I saw two underneath a pile of lumber in my backyard last week in Southeast Kansas USA. We were moving the lumber pile and when I picked up a board, they were curled up together underneath it. I guess they were cold under there and it was early in the morning. They just froze there and were so intertwined that it took me a minute to realize what I was looking at. Right on top of their heads and down the middle of their back was a pumpkin colored orange pattern, accented with white and they must have just gotten new scales, because they were very shiny. The rest of their bodies was a deep green and black. They were so laid back and didn't even attempt to bite me as I gently picked up one and then another by the tail and guided them to a hole in the garage where they could save out of the way of birds and the sun! They seemed to take advantage of that gesture and I have not seen them since, but it sure made my day to have them cross my path! It always makes me feel like everything is right with the world when I see a wild animal. NOTE: CAUTION: I knew from living in my area for a long time that these snakes were not poisonous before I picked them up-They were Gardner Snakes! (About 14 in. long)
