There is no law that says you have to breastfeed for 6 months. My son was a preemie and he got breast milk in his feeding tube for the first 10 weeks and went on formula after that and he will be 2 next month and has no developmental delays. The formulas that they have out now are a lot better than they used to be. It is your decision and don't listen to people that keep telling you that you need to keep breastfeeding. Get a breast pump and put the milk in a bottle and start by mixinf half breast milk and half formula so they get used to it. Do that for about a week and switch to all formula.

You can wean the baby cold turkey by just giving a bottle instead. However, Breast milk is best and if possible should be kept up for at least the first year. You can pump and do that. I know of a lady who breast-fed her child until she was five. I don't recommend that extreme, but you should consider since this is the best thing for the child. Even when they move to cereal, mix it witth breast milk.

Advent has probably the best nipples for babies transferring from the breast.

I am currently trying to ween my daughter from the breast...I have been lucky because she has decided on her own that she likes the bottle we picked out for her and sometimes she will only eat from the bottle....I asked my doctor what the best way to start weening is and she said to start replacing some of her feeding with the bottle until she starts to like and learn that she gets nourishment from the bottle. She told me to replace the morning and night feedings last. I pump every night and try to keep enough milk on hand so I can be constant but its hard because its so much easier to pull out the boob and feed ;o)
I bought a bottle designed for babies that are making the change from breast to bottle its called the Playtex Nurser and my daughter loves it. Hope all goes well for you ..Good Luck!

You should breast feed for AT LEAST the first 6 mos. A year is better. Anyways, start him on the bottle if he's old enough. Breast feeding will keep him from getting ill later on & it makes you & your baby closer.

you have to wean your baby off go buy a bottle with nipples that is closets to yours and you have to give the baby the bottle on the first morning feeding then second should be breast and so on it is very easy you should also try to express your milk so that the baby recognizes the taste and scent from the bottle and wont reject it as hard don't worry it is not that hard i have four breast all of them until they were 8 months old

It is true that breast is best BUT if you need to wean then I would recommend cutting the baby off cold turkey. Put back on your regular bra and stop giving in. The tough part is letting your milk dry up, that hurts. My pediatrician said to put a cabbage leaf in your bra against your skin and your milk will dry up really quickly. This did work for my sister. Yet I can honestly can say that I have never tried that remedy.

Weaning can be tricky. If the child is younger, just stop breastfeeding and substitute a bottle. If the child is older and insists on it, then you can try putting aloe vera, which is very bitter, on your breasts. Again, substitute the bottle when the child is wanting to feed.
