The average life span is 3-5 years but of course they can live longer or shorter since its just the average. Its nice that you have him in a 5 gallon tank so many people think that is too much but they really are so much more active and to me they look so much happier when they have space to move around a play. I have mine in a 5.5 gallon and I have it filled with silk plants (I have a black thumb so no live plants for me) and a little coconut hut that I made and its so cool to see him hid and when I go near the tank he charges at me.

Based on what I've seen with two boys under the age of 7, you can not kill a beta. Just dont feed them too much.

I had one for over 3 years....another for almost that long.
You are doing the best thing having it in a regular aquarium, more air circulation and better filtration.Just keep the tank clean, dont over feed, etc.
Enjoy it!!! They are a lot of fun.
