Like how they grew up, where they hung out, how they became the way they are? I'd like to find out more about mine, but sometimes I don't know what questions to ask and they don't know how to answer!

More than I want to.

Your aunts & uncles have the library there, and they'll be happy to snitch on their siblings. You get the BEST info from aunts, uncles, and their old high school & college friends.

People love to talk about themselves, though. "What was it like growing up in (fill in the blank)?"

If they're evasive, think of the most embarrassing thing you can and ask if thats why they don't want to talk about it. If what you thought of is worse than that, they'll usually fess up.

"What was it like growing up with hippies?"
(no answer)
"Did you guys all get addicted to Heroin?"
"NO. Just pot, geez!"
Busted.

Not that much. Lots of skeletons in the closet. I know some of the history and it is kind of touching; some parts are really sad anyway....
I have stumbled upon quite a few secrets....which made me laugh really but not to them. Most are very conservative folks.

Families are all different. Some are very guarded. I don't know a way of "asking"......
My maternal grand-parents were way more open and full of anecdotes but some.......they are a mystery....some kind of "secret' where they really came from.

Families..........sometimes that is when people really show their real selves. Some family members seem to forget the basic manners like civility, politeness, helpfulness...For some it is like a dumping ground where they can let loose of all the negative feelings whereas it is "picture perfect" outside. Some people are like that; not saying all......

So much talk about "dysfunctional families".....but who speaks about a "dysfunctional workplace" ??

Depends what your background is of course. Some creeds are a lot more worried about keeping the "family honour"..

Will carry on later....(tired.........won't take the car !).

Later : nah......I won't add more.....just thinking about the Q in general.

I guess it has to do with your family dynamics. My children just ask a question and I answer, honestly.Try having a family night.Order some pizza and no T.V.Tell your parents you want to know more about your heritage and what it was like growing up for them.Don't put them on the spot with questions you know they don't want to answer.I hope this helps.♥

The older I get the more I find out because we can talk about our life experiences without getting in to trouble for letting them know what we did when I was a teen.
