I have read that in some Muslim countries a theft is punishable by the loss of the perpertrators hands. In the United States, under a "three strikes your our law", there is a shoplifter in California serving life in prison. Think about it which would you take?

Lose a hand. I wonder if you get to pick which one. There was a guy on T.V. last night who went to prison at age 13 & got 50 years for robbery. He's mentally ill from severe abuse as a child & with the extra time hooked on his sentence for violent behavior he will spend the rest of his life in prison. When he isn't trying to kill the guards he is trying to kill himself. This other guy serving a life sentence said he prays to God every night that he won't wake up in the morning.

Hands

The Muslim practice for this started in the Middle Ages, when you would use one hand for eating, and the other for matters of personal hygene (Using the bathroom, etc). If they chopped off your hand, you had to use the same hand for both tasks. And the California shoplifter stole a slice of pizza. Yes, he got life in prison. But why would anyone steal, especially if you already had two prior felony convictions? Can you "accidently" commit a felony? Not very often! But still, losing a hand is preferable to losing your freedom.

Yea, and you don't want to know the punishment for rape...

I'd lose a hand, one hand is nowhere near as important as my freedom.
