I find it disgusting that people use hyphenated names to classify themselves: African-American, Italian-American, etc. If you live in this country than you should be PROUD to call yourself an American of "______" descent. You should not put the country of any other nation first. What do you think.

I love my Country and for those who don`t , well don`t let the border gates hit you in the hiney when you leave..

I am not telling you I hate YOUR Country. I am telling you I love MY Country..

There is no such a thing as ‘American’ nationality, America is not a nation America is a continent with many nations in it. The US never named itself the name of the United States is a designation it comes from the end of the Declaration of Independence, "WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled...". The preamble to the U.S. Constitution reiterated the phrase: "We the People of the United States..." (The authors of these two documents probably used the phrase "united states" in place of a list of colonies/states because they remained uncertain at the time of drafting which colonies/states would sign off on the sentiments therein.) The geographic term "America" specifies the states' home on the American continent.

It is therefor incorrect to refer to US citizens as Americans with the intent of denoting citizenship, or the United States as America with the intent of denoting a nation. Americans have a term for US citizens, we are called United Statesians by the rest of Americans, to say American with the intent of denoting citizenship or America when we mean the United States reflects poorly on our attitude towards the 70% of Americans that are not United Statesians.

Bless America, from Nome to Patagonia.

People in Canada call themselves "______ Americans"

It's the politically correct way of classifying yourself..

It has nothing to do with the country you live in.

Of course, in old times people did not classify themselves into groups.

Usually americans have social security number, pay less unievrsity tuitions, have more rights than people who just "live" inside US boundaries.

I think it sort of depends on how far your family is from their country of origin. For example, my family was here before the Revolution, but my good friend's grandparents were born in Hungary. I think of myself as just plain old American, while he thinks of himself as Hungarian-American. It doesn't offend me -- if it came down to it, we'd all just say were are American.

It's true. I agree with, that, even if I don't support a lot of the government's decisions. This is especially true if the person has never been in the country they say they are from.
