When I listen to Stevie Wonder I'm totally blowen away by the layers of sound in a lot of his music. The Beatles always stick out to me as great song writers and there is no doubt that they produced a large amount of music. I bet one of the composers for end credits has a lot of music to their credit, but I don't know any by name.

I suppose John Joseph Merlin is, the man who invented the harpsichord, which later evolved into the piano. The world's greatest composers used his harpsichords and pianofortes, such as Bach, Beethoven &c. He gave so much to us music-lovers, he deserves more recognition!

The mothers voice. Humming, cooing and sounds to her baby. The greatest and the oldest creation ever. The original composer, producer, conductor, and song writer.

The first voice we ever hear. Music always.

OH JESUS how the hell am I supposed to answer that?!?!?! There are so many legends, it would do them all a great injustice to not list everyone! Music is so unique because it's constantly evolving and musicians feed off each other. They are all linked together in some way.

(and to the broad above me, it's Jimi Hendrix, not Jimmy. One would think if you truly appreciated his music you would spell his name correctly.)

There are too many greats to narrow it down to just one.
I agee with the previous answers of Bach, Mozart, and Waters. But there a lot of other great classical composers and classic rock song writers who deserve a lot of credit, too.
