You know, I think it funny that most are going to say "stand out" "stand for what you believe" Blah, blah. And I have to agree with them.
But one day, all will be forced to conform to society by way of their financial security. It's called the mark of the Beast. Without it, nobody will be accepted into society and will be faced with what they TRULY believe. Will they conform? or will they choose to "STAND OUT"?

What rules us today is the likes and dislikes of few people. In some countries if you stand for your own beliefs it may cost even your own life. Ridiculed and shunned by the society is not very serious issue.
Stand out - is my answer and I do that.

Well that is a one sided question now isn't it? If you truly want to know why would you call the conformists "timid"? I would say I have the courage to stand out for something that really matters to me but I don't try to stand out just to be different.

I go against the grain whenever possible. Today I asked the lady in the deli section of the store if there is a limit on the amount of samples I can have of their food items. I love to see clerk's reaction to this question. She figured there is no limit. My kind of girl :) The other girl said only one. Boo :( I've asked if there is a limit on the amount of ketchup or napkins I can take and always get great reactions. Try it some time.

It is better to be a Socrates, ridiculed, shunned and poisoned to death for standing out than a timid fellow toeing, becoming a stooge of others and being prized by them for doing and being that. Timids die many times before their death. I follow Socrates.

Here is the thing about standing out. 90% of the jerks who are fighting the 'good' fight are idiots fighting for recognition, fame and personal gain. Like the people who fought for the rights of the gay penguins in that zoo. Why stand up and fight for gay penguins? I stand up and fight for me and mine. So I do stand up and fight, but it IS a conformist way just like everyone else because I am doing it for me, just like everyone else..see the pattern? Standing up to protest these days is the 'norm'.

Standing out is more fun. Conforming is the easy way out.

I think that you are dangerously close to be completely shallow and useless if you base your reaction to the experience of life on the perception of others. You have to react from the inside out.. not the outside in.
