I feel so sad for teams who did not make it to the final having to drag their *** back to the field for some meaningless match. Hell Who remembers the 3rd place winners? Except the last world cup maybe if u have good memory.

Yes foong like i said if u have good memory. Now that u bring up suker then i can slightly remember. Both was just the last 2 w/cup. So not hard to recall.
What do they get for 3rd place? A mini world cup?

I do not think it should be abolished. If you make it to the semifinals, and lose, you deserve more than your cup to be over. It is a chance to end the tournament on a high note. Turkey got third in 02, Croatia in 98, Sweden in 94 over tournament-surprise Bulgaria. I am not saying that means it shouldn't be abolished, I'm just saying. Besides, sometimes those matches turn out to be better than the final.

I guess it is a rather cruel process for the teams that lose in semifinals, but out of selfish interest, I want to keep the 3rd place playoff at least this year, so I can see both my favorite/second favorite teams play before I leave on Sunday (hence missing the final match).

the third place match is still exciting, no matter how meaningless the match it would be. anyone remember CROATIA & Davor Suker, their top scorer in 1998 & what about TURKEY & Hakan Sukur, the world cup fastest goal scorer in 2002. Both teams finished 3rd.
i expect the match between GERMANY & PORTUGAL will be a good match. For GERMANY, it is a matter of pride now & PORTUGAL will love to equal their best performance of 1966, when they finished 3rd.

u also have to remember that sports are a business! usually the final four teams are all high caliber teams or atleast teams that got hot at the right time. the third place game still fills a stadium full of admission paying fans$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that is what the guys upstairs see this game as. thats a good chunk of money to be made by hosting one additional game. also, in theory, it should be an entertaining game considering they two of the top 4 teams. ya heard?

They should still have 3rd place play offs because they give the losing teams a chance to redeem themselves. Anyway aren't 3rd place play offs usually more exciting than the final because the teams play more freely?

Yes it is very sad for the team that ends up 4th because they have to lose again. At least 3rd gets medals

3rd place is important because it is like a bronze medal. Being top 3 in the world is still great!
