Sorry to tell you, it's not a very funny joke. Anyway, the reason is because there were so many different kinds of smiths in the professional sense in Europe before the migration to the the world. It was common for someone to be called by what the did for a living. Like shoemaker for instance. There we're blacksmiths, woodsmiths, metalsmiths, etc. They just shortened it to Smith because it was just easier that way. See, not so funny.

Literally, Smith is one of the top five names in America along with Jones, Brown, and a couple more I can't remember for sure right now.

I don't get the joke part though...hope you let us know.

Actually, my mother's maiden name is Smith. Her great-grandfather (also a Smith) had 14 kids with his first wife. After she died (I wonder why after 14 kids), he remarried and had 14 more. For a grand total of 28 little Smiths that grew up to have kids of their own. That might have something to do with it! lol. But seriously, that is a true story.

the smiths just didnt know when to quit haveing babys.oor they wanted to run a big plantation and didnt want to hire folks so they just started haveing kids cause in 5 or 6 years they would be old enough to plow or milk a cow , im jokeing ok.

because back in the 1800's black smiths changed their last name to smith and since there were a lot of black smiths back then they basically all had the same last name
