try this, go into power saver mode, and once it is in that mode, press Escape.
If by power saver mode, you mean Standby or Hiberate, then you can just press Escape.
By the way, i have XP, and if the above doesn't work, then let me know how you are getting into Power Saver Mode

Follow the instructions given by the other Answerers, and when you get the desktop back, in an empty section of if right click the mouse, choose "properties", click on the Screensaver Tab, choose Power Options, Sand by NEVER, Hibernate NEVER, Turn off Monitor 20 minutes.
After 20 mins of idle time, the monitor will power down. CRTs are energy hogs. If you have an LCD never mind. Leave the box running 24/7. On/off/on/off is harder on the electronics. Get a UPS with soft shutdown software.

I would assume that you need to shut your computer down (hard shut down) by holding the power button on your computer and then go into your power settings and disable power saver mode.
