I have my desktop and my wireless laptop in my network. If i use the security thru network magic I can't get on the interet with my laptop. When i turn it off both computers can be up and running. I don't like leaving it unsecured, and I have looked and looked for the answer. By the way I bought this router when my son lived with me for his laptop, I no longer have the manual.

I use wireless too for my network, but I use Belkin Pre_N. I did use Linksys but it failed me on security and then the company did not want to help me. I researched routers and adapters and found it best to use both from the same manufacturer, even though most say they are suppose to be interchangable. I know they should, but still they work best when from the same company.

Now, I know that the encryption you use has to be the same on all nodes (computers, and other wireless components). If it is not exactly the same on each one, each adapter the security will not allow you to access the net. Also, some software internet security suites are not yet compatable with WPA or WPA-2 but are with WEP. WEP is not as strong as WPA. It is the firewall which may not be compatable with the WPA encryption. I had to remove my Panda firewall in order for my router to make the connection between my computers and the net. The router was running just fine, I just was unable to get the computers to get the IP addresses working properly. So, I removed Panda then downloaded and installed without the firewall. I loved Panda so it was worth it to me. Plus, my router has a supurb hardware firewall which are always better than software firewalls. This is due to the hardware firewall being at the router, not inside the computer. It can cause problems with a few programs connecting to the net, but I just have to tweak them at the firewall, place in the proper ports which you can find out from the manufacturer of the software and it fixes the problem. Some programs need to only be connected a short time and then discommected. The fewer ports you have open at a time the stronger your security. So, if you want to use a program you only use once in a while, you just go into your routers firewall via the browser and configure it, use the program, then go back in and disconnect it again. It is not difficult.

So, look to see if all your nodes, your computer, your laptop and any other wireless machine on your network all are using the same security, either WEP or WPA, WPA-2. If not then this is the problem or one of the problems. Then call up your software internet security suite manufacturers technical department and ask if it is compatable if you use WPA or WPA-2 encryption. If not you will need to decide whether you wish to keep it just without the firewall, or remove it all together and purchase one which is compatable.

I also strongly suggest you call up D-Link and order a user manual for your model. They should be happy to send one out, just tell them you lost your copy and need a new one. You also may be able to download version from the website. You can also get phone help from the tech department. While I had problems with Linksys I do not have one at all with Belkin and I have heard good things about D-Links tech assistance too. It may take a day or two but you can get this up and running and learn how to properly maintain your wireless network and connection.

Good luck and have a great evening.

You may consider using the built-in security features of your router and wireless laptop, since Network Magic seems to be causing a conflict with your hardware.

My suggestion to you is to call D-Link and ask them to help you set up a secure wireless network. They are trained professionals who are qualified to help you set up a secure network that is dependable. =)

Once you have it setup, you need to remove or disable Network Magic to avoid further issues.

Hope this helps!

properly that is a router era. If ought to care a lot less in case you connect to DSL, Cable, or perhaps instant bridge. in case you meant to purchase a router with a DSL MODEM outfitted into it then you definately did not get the astounding router. once you've a classic DSL modem that connects on your pc (with eithernet) merely bypass that line to the WAN / information superhighway port on your new router. in case you haven't got a DSL MODEM you want one.
