Where in the country are you? It depends on the climate as to care for the bulbs? In parts of the country that do not have cold winters people will dig up the bulbs and keep them in the fridge until it is time to plant. A bulb can last longer than two years depending on care and soil. When the plant has finished flowering and the leaves begin to wilt and shrivel cut back so the bulb can regain its energy for next season.

Tulips bloom again for many, many years. Mine have been going strong each Spring and they've been there for about ten years. After they bloom, they store energy from the leaves for the next blooming season. They need cold weather (Fall and Winter), too. Hopefully squirrels don't find them exposed and carry off with them!
