he ran an electornics company for many years and then retired to his farm in lebanon ohio. I spoke with him there in 1995 about my current space development project. He is a very private man surrounded by friends, neighbors and relatives that help keep his privacy private.

He is, and always has been, a person who likes his privacy. In contrast, the OTHER first man on the Moon, Buzz Aldrin, is very active in the public, promoting space flight and speaking out all the time. Buzz tried to get the honor of being the first one down the ladder of Apollo 11, but Neil was the commander of the mission so Buzz had to be the second one to step out of the Apollo 11 LM. Personally, I think Buzz would have been a better choice. Everyone talks about Neil like Buzz wasn't even there. It just is not fair!

Neil Armstrong likes his privacy. Every once in a while (usually around significant anniversaries of the first moon landing) he will give interviews, but he is not nearly a public figure as some of the other moon-landing astronauts (Aldrin, Cernan).

Actually he reappeared recently on TV on one of those news magazine programs for an interview. So he hasn't completely went into hiding.
He is a shy and a modest man. He will not directly take credit for any of the numerous achievements in his life. One of the big ones was, "How do you feel to have been the first man to walk on the moon?" He said, "just lucky I guess, I was in the rotation".
He is a doer not a talker. He'll walk the walk first then talk the talk a little bit later.
We can never have enough Americans like him. Sort of like a quiet cowboy.

I think jimmybrucehi is pretty close. Read "First Man" written by James R. Hansen, the only biographer authorized by Armstrong to write about him. I think you will be quite satisfied with the answer to your question after reading this book.

I heard he didn't like the celebrity and hype related to being the first man on the moon. Some people just don't want to be in the limelight.

Nothing strange in it.....the guy having self respect and goes into dark because he was annoyed with 'Lier' authorities when he surprisingly found 'a fleet of american UFO's welcomed them on moon on behalf of govt. and quoted 'why are we being used for PRO activities ?'

The government secreted him away, as with every other astronaut who "landed on the moon" at that studio.
