Possible, but definetly at your own risk. The recommended method would be to back up everything you can't afford to lose and start over from scratch.

Here's a pretty good procedure. If you have a DVD drive, you can put 4 gig of data on it, 8 if it's dual. I've never done a repair as they instruct but I think if you do a complete reinstall, your applications will need to be reloaded but I don't think your c:\Documents and Settings directory gets wiped. Either way, I'd back up that directory and any other one where you may have specifically put files. If you let Windows put files where it wants, they should all be in that directory under your username if you use one.

Answer: Windows XP is the operating system and all files and programs not on the installation disc will be erased during the new installation. They only feasible way to save the files or programs is to transfer them to another drive or burn them to a CD.

Sorry.

It would be better to start from scratch. XP runs better on a completely fresh install. It would be beneficial if you have created a separate partition on your harddrive, or you have more than one harddrive in your computer. If you have an extra partition or harddrive in your computer, you can transfer the files you want to keep, then reinstall XP. Once the installation is complete, the files you want to save will still be available in the place you saved them.

Here's an article for partitioning your harddrive:

Hope this helps!
