I don't agree that people only live to 60 to 70 on average. It's more 80 to 90 according to some data I've seen. It's my belief that too much technology is part to blame for people being unhappy. Too many choices, too much pressure to keep up with many variations of technology that continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Overpopulation in urban areas which leads to less jobs, more crime, poverty and a seemingly endless supply of drugs. Too much information crammed down our throats every night on the bazillion news channels. Before technology and the modern world, people needed each other just to survive. There was a camaraderie amongst human beings that no longer exists. Life was a lot simpler when all you had to do was put food on your table, a roof over your head, clothes on your back and a have a useful trade or service to offer others in trade for the things you and your family needed to live. For the most part, this was all it took to feel and express joy and happiness. Now it's all about who has the best toys, the biggest house and the newest car.

Sorry I could not answer earlier the computer was taken from me.
People are happy. Happiness can not be measured on a scale. Happiness is being pleased. People are as pleased with what they do as they always were, now we are just more aware of our surroundings then they did not know anything but the immediate environment around them. It is just that now they have more ambitions than a 100 years ago. Then most of the time they spent was with people their work did not require much. Now we have jobs that have a set number of hours. After you come home exhausted you have a family to take care of. I look at my mother and father. They are business owners. They work 72 hours a week. They are 46. They have diabetes and 5 children. When dad comes home he can relax, watch TV after he comes home. But not mom. She has to cook and clean, we help her but it is not enough. She sleeps 7 hours at the most. I asked them both if they were happy. They said yes.
We are happy with the things we achieve and have some are just more greedy now.
People do live longer lives. Average age in Americans live is 72 for men and 73 for women. 100 years ago people lived up to 50. Men were even less because they are too reckless to take care of themselves and have these wars to fight.
BUT PEOPLE ARE AS HAPPY AS THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN. That will not change. Our dreams are the same as always. Our prioties are the same as alway. A job. A house. 2 kids.

Happiness is not an absolute, and sometimes we fail to notice how happy we are at some point until we look back later and say: those were happy moments.
What I'm trying to convey here is that happiness is not a continuum like a line, but rather a discrete set of "happiness packets or points", that most people have experienced to varying degrees in their lives, perhaps not noticing them.
Does this sound like a quantum theory of happiness?. Perhaps I'm unto something here.
And by the way, people do live longer now , not less than before.

Oh I would definetly say happiness level has decreased in the past 100 years.People are not happy because people are not doing the right things to make themselves happy, we are human, and therefore are more attracted to evil than good things, so we fail without giving enough effort and fall into the traps of pervers entertainment. We do things on our own accord, because we are selfish self-centered society oriented wicked people, no matter what we say or preach(yes I am including myself in this even as I "preach")we can't get out of our human nature, it has worsened though over the years as technology and toleration of bad attitudes, laziness, over active sense of pleasure seeking, and so many more horrible things seap deeper into us, and primarily and most unfortunatley, our souls. What all of this leads to however, is only that we ALL need God, to except Jesus and ask him to forgive us and to come into our hearts, our souls, our minds, and our entire being and livlihood. No, you won't be truly happy while your still living even if you're a newborn child of God, but you will be rewarded someday in heaven, be given more incentive and a better mind-set, inner feeling and wholesomeness(so much more that is unexplainable, can only be felt really)to live life as we're supposed to, we've all been lead astray though, haven't we...

There is more pollution and also there is more stress then there was in the late 1800's. We are so busy worrying about getting bigger houses, faster cars and nicer clothes that we forget to slow down and enjoy life and before we know it life has passed us by and we did not even see it. Our heart can only take so much.

I think people were happier back then. I think all the media and news show us the life of all the rich and famous people, and it kind off creates a standard that many people want to live up to. This makes them sad.

The pollutants WILL shrink...... by way of fact woodland will disappear, all of the oil and mineral aspects would be drained. by way of grasping adult adult males that saved on destroying our organic aspects. as quickly as the oil grant will vanish, adult adult males will return to the primitive attitude to life, till finally the earth will run dry and timber would be used as fuels. And the destiny technology would be afflicted by the incorrect doings of the present technology. i'm hoping and pray that extra human beings will connect jointly to make this international a extra helpful place for the destiny generations.

People are not happy because they have no contentment.Even though we are earning more money and have more comforts than our ancestors we are not happier than them.
