It started at least 20 yrs ago when first sport bikes came from factory with full fairings
(GSX-R, FZR) they were dropped and fairings were too expensive to replace. Also bikes were not good for geting around town, too much weight on your wrists, I've had carpal tunnel decompression :0) they got modified to be more practical for use in traffic,higher wider handlebars, seat that stopped you sliding off the back during acceleration, fighting for position around north circular/M25/central London (like Boston on a bad day)

Because racers would get into crashes and wouls still want to ride. Instead of buying new fairings they would simple rip off the damaged pieces and sometimes add funky parts and lights. What do you get...? The birth of the naked bike.

its a British term for a sport bike that is completely customized i.e. suspension, exhaust, frame, lights, etc.
