I used to play the original Everquest awhile back (like 2000-3ish) but it seemed like after the last few expansions the game wasn’t nearly as fun to play and I really didn’t have the time to devote to it. Lately I have kind of missed playing and I’ve wanted to start playing another online RP again. I’ve heard that World of Warcraft is really exciting and has a great community but I don’t really talk to any of my gamer friends anymore so I don’t know much about it. I’ve read up on it from websites, but what I really need to know I have to find out from the people who play it. Is it a lot different than EQ was? Is it hard to start out all alone? Friends introduced me to EQ and they were fairly advanced when I began so they gave me lots of advice and showed me around. Also, the game’s website says that the quests don’t require the extensive time of many RPGs…is this true? Any answers or advice any players could give me would be great.

As a comparison to EverQuest: it's much more "casual gamer" friendly.

For example - quests don't require that you walk up to an NPC and ask a specific question to trigger it, you simply right click on an NPC (which is marked as having a quest.)

The interface is much more intuitive, and combat (especially PvP) takes on a faster pace. In addition, the interface is HIGHLY customizable. I stopped using the in-the-box interface soon after release, having downloaded several mods and completely restructuring it. It was relatively easy to do. (some mods simply require that you download and unzip into a folder, whereas other mods are borderline programming)

There's faaaaar less zone camping than there ever was in EverQuest. The use of "Instances" (where a group of players get there own zone in specified areas for PvE) ensures that people aren't waiting in line for hours or days for NPC Boss mobs.

The community runs the spectrum of unbelievably immature to rude to helpful to serious, like any online game. Blizzard support has been good in terms of dealing with problem gamers though. (In my personal experience)

It's easy to start alone, but leveling can be quite a chore when you hit 45-56 (out of 60 levels). It helps to find a good guild to level with. The game has an in-game means of finding a group for instances, but "LFG for blah blah, pst" generally works very well.

Dying does NOT result in a loss of experience (thank goodness). You may have to walk for a bit to recover your body, and devious members of the opposing faction may ruin a quest you're trying to complete if they kill you at the right moment, but all in all it's much easier to deal with than EQ.

Personally, I'll recommend a regular (PvE) server to learn on...but once you have a grasp on it, PvP server is the way to go. The pleyer skill level that you encounter tends to be higher than it would on a PvE server, and you'll learn to get good reeeaaaal quick. I've got stories...

It's very addictive, I decided to stop playing for awhile because it was eating too much of my time.

It's not a lot different than EQ was, but it has an extensive community that isn't as fanatical and bloodthirsty about gear (the system in which one receives gear is better in my opinion).

It's not hard to start out alone at all. I was a total loner through two lvl 60 characters, so don't worry too much about that.

Actually, the part where they said that quests aren't that time consuming REALLY IS true. Quests are very streamlined and can point you in the right direction. Some of the quests are really hard, but that's beyond the question a little.

Hope this helps a little.

WoW is unique and addicting in the sense that you can play it for 5 minutes to 5 hours. Some of the quests don't require much effort. There are seriously some quests that are "Talk to the person next to me!"

Good about WoW: It's exciting that there are many different classes, races, and professions that you can do/be/try that will affect your gameplay.

Bad about WoW: A few quests in this game requires lots of time and effort. If you decide to go end game, expect to be on for hours at a time.

Info about WoW: WoW requires lots of teamwork at times. Expect to be attacked by members of the opposite side who are much stronger than you (this is called ganking, if you go to a PvP server). Now, there are PvE servers too, where it's player versus environment.

RP on WoW: There are WoW servers to RP on.

If you want more information, just email me. Meanwhile, I shall resume playing WoW now =p
