It is important to know anti-depressants are not mood elevators that alter a patent's mood. Anti-depressant medication simply corrects chemicals that are not in proper balance. It is something akin to a diabetic taking insulin.

To some extent the patent's attitude is changed because they will feel better and life is more manageable. It does not change the person that you are - you just feel better. It does take up to six weeks for chemical balance (effecting many systems of the body - abnormal sleep patterns are a major symptom of this imbalance) to be restored. Usually people do not notice a dramatic change - just after a few weeks they will comment they are not feeling so bad as they were and they are having a lot more good days than bad. Normal sleep patterns return, the patient is more rested and life is better!

I think sometimes that antidepressants are designed to make someone more palatable/socially acceptable to others and that they really don't do anything but dull the real person. We have become a society of drones. Some of us are just wired differently and yes, we'd like to fit in a little bit better, but at what cost? A lot of things would piss anyone off, you know?

I used to resist the whole meds thing.. I thought they would change me from being.. well me. But no. Some make you more tired and ya that can change your situation because well.. You are tired. But really, they don't change the real you. Just be aware of how they are making you feel and if you don't like what's going on talk to your Dr. or perscriber. If they don't listen, get a new Dr. or perscriber. I think the biggest fear with psych meds is that they will change the YOU inside.. but really they are just to help regulate and hopefully make you feel better and more able to go about the life you would like to have for yourself.

they don't change who you are, they change your attitude. a person with depression is always negative, upset, crying, can not sleep(or sleep too much), can not eat(or eat too much), etc. antidepressants solve these problems. they help you to live your normal day to day life.
they do not, however, make you change who you are: i.e. liking certain television programs, hobbies, the friends you hang out with, foods you eat, etc.
BUT...if what you are doing as a person is negative, antidepressants might change your outlook so much that you no longer do certain things. such as, perhaps you no longer find yourself watching depressing movies that you used to "enjoy" or maybe you don't want chocolate ice cream anymore, you like to exercise more, etc.
basically, anti depressants are not a cure all, but do help a person with depression function normally like they should.

Depends. Some SRI's (paxil, zoloft, etc, do a websearch, i'm too lazy) in some people can cause major whitewashing of emotions. But my friend is on Zolfot, she;s 13 and it does wonders for her, she's very happy and beck to being herself again. But DON'T EVER TAKE LITHIUM it turn people into zombies, literally you feel out of it in a very very bad way, its horrible.

I take Paxil and don't notice any difference in my behaviour apart from the fact that I don't get as stressed out about little things as I used to.
