I'm trying to find the most inexpensive way to ressurect this patio. Can I have sand or gravel put on top of the old pavers?

you may have to tear it out, if you do, remember to run a tamper over the gravel that you lay down before you pour the cement. tamping the gravel will ensure that the new one does not desintigrate. tampers can be rented from any rental place and are easy to opperate.

It depends on how disintegrated they are. If they are crush and crumble really easy, say with a strike from a hammer, than you can build over, but you have to add some 3/4 crushed stone, compact with a power tamper, add 1 inch of sand and then your new blocks. If the old pavers are still pretty solid but break to pieces about 1 inch dia. then you can compact those add sand etc. You may still need to add some 3/4 crushed stone to fill in if the old pavers don't completely cover.

I'd have to actually see the patio to understand what you mean. But, all you need to put down pavers is a hard compacted surface. Preferably sloping slightly away from the house. Check out www.garysullivanonline.com This guy has his own DIY radio show on the weekends. He can help you.

no the old paver are uneven and will crack the old ones when they settle. the easit way to do it is to remove the old ones and if they are in that bad of shape you might want to use the old ones to use after your crush the old more and use the paver sand to put inbetween the new pavers and make sure you level the ground and remove all the pavers

No because the old pavers are not square and will continue to disintegrate. If you put new pavers over the old ones the new ones will just crack.

Absolutly NOT!! They will need ripping up, the surface to be leveled and compacted again, and new ones laid. The most inexpensive way to do it is yourself. The following website might help :
